Old Sydneians’ Union Scholar

Since our founding in 1893, the Union has supported students at the School through various scholarships, bursaries and prizes. These are in recognition of academic, sporting, or cultural achievement, and to commemorate the lives of Old Sydneians. The Union’s foremost award is the Old Sydneians’ Union Scholarship, awarded annually to a current student.

Between 1914 to 1918, while nearly two thousand Old Sydneians were serving in WWI, annual membership of the Union increased from 386 to over 600; life membership went from 17 to 150; and the Union’s assets increased tenfold. With increased financial security, the Union established the Old Sydneians’ Union Scholarship in 1916, to be awarded each year to “the most outstanding boy in scholarship, sport and influence among his fellows” along the lines of the Rhodes Scholarship established in 1899.

The Old Sydneians’ Union Scholarship has be awarded annually for more than one-hundred years. The Scholarship is a substantial amount and aims to support the Scholar’s initiatives at and after leaving College Street. Past Scholars have utilised the Scholarship to fund academic research and collegiate residence at university; participate in international forums and conferences; and contribute to start-up projects or entrepreneurial endeavours.
