Scholarships & Prizes
Over its history, the Union has funded and contributed to a number of scholarships, bursaries and prizes at the School and to Old Sydneians. These include awards to current and future students, masters, and OS.
Alongside the Old Sydneians’ Union Scholarship (see more), the Union also funds a number of other scholarships and prizes. During and after the First World War, the Union commenced its ongoing commitment to support and recognise members of the entire Grammar community for their achievements and future ambitions. This continues to this day.

The Grammar Mascot
Alongside supporting the awards above, some OS may be unaware that the catchcry “Alligator Grammar” stems, in part, from the Union’s longstanding support of an alligator at Taronga Zoo. In 1977, an initiative by students set out to acquire a mascot for the School and, adopting the bigger is better approach, “the largest American Alligator” was duly selected and named Alastair.
After the 1970’s, it was requested the Union continue to care for an alligator in Grammar’s name. Since that time we have continued this charitable endeavour to help care for Alastair’s descendants and relatives.
